The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and The Lemelson Foundation is sponsoring another project with open innovation focus: "The Initiative for Open Innovation" (IOI) in Australia.
If we look at the current status of Open Innovation (from a practical viewpoint) we see a lot of company initiatives or independend open innovation communities. These are usually focussed on the inbound process of open innovation.
But initiatives with focus on the outbound process, especially from an independent organisation, are lacking. The "Initiative for Open Innovation" is one of those few.
Their aim is to standardize the patent landscape in order to foster open innovation in the current patent system. A standardized infrastructre and communication plattform could utilize unused resources and patents, e.g. through new web applications. Other objectives are:- Creation of new web applications to standardize open patent landscaping
- Creation of dynamic patent landscapes as public goods, focusing on malaria, tuberculosis, dengue and other critical infectious diseases
- Providing internationally relevant patent law, policy and practice guidance
A special focus of the IOI are infectious diseases associated with poverty. Each Foundations sponsors one full-time position for a patent professional at the office in Brisbane or Canberra, Australia.
